Doesn’t Need To Be Flashy, It Just Needs To Be Good

Big Fundamental is reference to my favourite basketballer of all time, Tim “Big Fundamental” Duncan.  Playing during an era of flamboyant superstars like Shaq, Kobe and Allen Iverson, Tim quietly went about his business, playing textbook basketball whilst achieving both team and personal accolades throughout his career. Even though he ended his career with one of the most accomplished resumes including five championships, he is often overlooked as one of the games greats as he didn’t command the limelight and instead chose to quietly go about his business.

It’s this same, underappreciated perception that we find our beloved friend Riesling has these days. Like Tim, it might not make the most noise or command the highest prices but in terms of bang for buck and pure deliciousness, there isn’t any grape that comes close to it.

REGION: Grampians, Victoria

VINEYARD: Aradale Vineyard, grown on red sandy loam, on Djub Wurrung Country

VINTAGE: 2025

VARIETAL: 100% Riesling

GROWING SEASON: 2025 was the goldilocks vintage, featuring warm temperatures that never got too hot, creating near-perfect conditions for grape growing and resulting in beautifully balanced wines.

ALCOHOL:  12% - 7.1 standard drinks

WINEMAKING: Picked early morning to retain freshness. Destemmed fruit, direct to the press. Cool, slow, native ferment in stainless steel tanks. Left on fine lees for 3 months.

FOOD MATCH: Perfect with the full spectrum of Asian cuisine.

REVIEWS:

“Big Fundamental' is actually inspired by the winemaker's favourite NBA player of the same nickname, but it applies equally to the Grampians' star white, riesling. Apple blossom, honeysuckle, lime citrus, grapefruit, preserved lemon, musk and gentle ginger spice fill the scent and the palate with an arresting cool-climate delicacy. Nicely textured, it combines with a pithy, bright acidity that tingles the tastebuds and brings a precise, clean citrus finish, with ginger-lemongrass spice lingering.”
